Former RSW officer charged with sex crime against inmate

Joseph Daniel Demarino Jr.

A former corrections officer with the Rappahannock-Shenandoah-Warren Regional Jail in Warren County was arrested and charged  Friday with attempted carnal knowledge of an inmate.

The officer, Joseph Daniel Demarino Jr., 51, of Linden, oversaw the work release and home monitoring program during his employment at the jail.

A 32-year-old female inmate under the jail’s home monitoring program alleged that Demarino visited her at her residence in New Market in October 2016 and behaved inappropriately, making comments of a sexual nature as well as performing inappropriate touching of a sexual nature.

She did not tell police of the incident until August 2017.

Based on these accusations, Demarino was charged with attempted carnal knowledge of an inmate and is being held at RSW Regional Jail without bond.

This is not the first time Demarino has been charged with inappropriate behavior against an inmate.

In January 2017, Demarino faced three charges of sex-related offenses against three female inmates, and was ultimately found guilty of carnal knowledge of an inmate, a felony offense, in June 2017. His five-year sentence was suspended and he received a two-year probation.

Those offenses allegedly occurred between August and November 2016, making this recent allegation the fourth sex-related accusation against Demarino in that time frame.

Demarino is scheduled to appear before General District Court at 9 a.m. today for a bond reconsideration hearing.
