Faith, love and family define this couple’s marriage

WINCHESTER – John and Patti Solenberger met in their high school algebra class.

“I was the math student trying to pay attention,” Patti Solenberger said. “And John was the class clown distracting everyone.”

At first she admitted she wasn’t overly fond of her future husband. But over time, their classroom conversations grew into a friendship. That friendship then sparked a romantic relationship.

“There’s nothing like marrying your high school sweetheart,” Patti Solenberger said. “Sometimes it’s hard to believe.”

For over 37 years the couple have been partners  – not only in life and in marriage, but in running the family business, Solenberger’s Hardware in Winchester.

“It’s such a pleasure to get to work with your best friend every day,” she said. “When John lost his parents it was difficult for us all. Especially him. But he continued his family legacy. And I know they would be immensely proud.”

Love and family are the two staples that she said keep the Solenbergers going each and every day.

“We’re incredibly lucky to have one another,” she said. “So many of my friends have experienced heartache and loss, just like we have. But thankfully we’ve had one another to fall back on.”

But faith, she said, is what she believes has helped shape and define who they are today.

“Without it, I don’t think we’d be as fortunate” she said. “I wouldn’t of met John in math class. We wouldn’t of gotten married or had children. I most certainly wouldn’t have grandchildren. Our faith has guided us to where we’re supposed to be. And I count my lucky stars each and every day for what I have today.”
