Strasburg Town Council selects interim member

Curtis Falkenstein

STRASBURG — The Strasburg Town Council chose  Curtis Falkenstein Monday as an interim member.

The decision came in a 4-3 vote with three members  favoring Emily Reynolds for the position.

The vote came with little discussion following a set of two closed-session discussions last week.

Falkenstein is a college and career coach at Lord Fairfax Community College and a head brewer at Ridge Runner Farms and Brewing Company, according to his Facebook profile.

He will replace former council member Shirley Maddox, who resigned at the end of January, citing personal reasons. Maddox said in a December interview with the Northern Virginia Daily that she was moving to Maryland, but did not give specifics.

“I was very honored to have been elected and I worked very hard with the infrastructure committee, and we got some really good work done,” Maddox said at the time.

After Maddox’s resignation, Strasburg opened up applications to fill the vacancy. Eight people, including Falkenstein and Reynolds, wound up applying to fill the seat.

During Monday’s meeting,  the council voted unanimously to hold a special election to fill the vacant seat. The election is scheduled for May 1, along with elections for four other Town Council seats.

That seat will be up for election again in 2020, when it was originally scheduled.
