Man involved in Saturday shooting arrested on drug charges

A man who shot and killed a woman Saturday during what he said was an attempted break-in at his residence was charged Monday with possession of cocaine when law enforcement officers went to re-interview him in connection with the shooting.

Frederick County Sheriff’s Office Capt. Aleck Beeman said law enforcement officers found the drug when they went to re-interview Gregory Grove at a hotel on Millwood Pike,

They noticed the smell of burnt crack cocaine, Beeman said, and seized a clear baggie that Grove had tucked into his pants.

Tests confirmed the bag contained crack cocaine, Beeman said.

Grove, 65, was booked into the Northwestern Regional Adult Detention Center on a $3,000 bond. He was no longer on the inmate list for the center as of 6:40 a.m. Wednesday.

Law enforcement responded to a call on Saturday night for a shooting at a house on Ruebuck Lane, according to a release from the Sheriff’s Office. Grove told deputies that one or two people tried to break into his residence, according to the release.

Authorities said Shayna Lacy, 39, of Bunker Hill, West Virginia, was killed outside of a bedroom window when Grove fired a 12-gauge shotgun at what he said was a person breaking into the house.

The Sheriff’s Office is waiting on toxicology reports from an autopsy on Lacy.

Beeman confirmed there was a drug overdose at Grove’s home in the days before Saturday’s shooting. Beeman would not disclose who the person was but confirmed it was not Lacy or Grove.

Grove’s home was not known to police for any drug activity before the overdose, Beeman said.

Investigators with the Sheriff’s Office are still investigating all aspects of Lacy’s death, including if it could have been drug related, Beeman said.

If anyone has any information on the shooting, Beeman asked they call 540-662-6168.
