Staunton police picked up two suspects Wednesday afternoon wanted in an armed robbery in Strasburg that occurred earlier that morning.

Richard Dale Culley, 29, and his wife Tammy Ann Culley, 28, both of Nathalie,  remain held without bond at Middle River Regional Jail in Augusta County. Strasburg police Chief Wayne Sager said Thursday he did not know when the suspects would be transferred to Rappahannock-Shenandoah-Warren Regional Jail or would appear for their charges in Shenandoah County. Online court records show the Culleys were charged earlier this month with trespassing in Halifax County and were free on a summons to appear in General District Court on April 23.

Officers responded to the area of 221 S. Loudoun St. at approximately 12:30 a.m. for a reported robbery, according to information from the Strasburg Police Department. The suspects had fled the scene before officers arrived. The two adult male victims reported that the suspects brandished a firearm and demanded their cellphone and cigarettes, police said.

Through the investigation, officers identified the Culleys as the two suspects, according to police. Strasburg police officer Paul Bernd obtained felony arrest warrants charging Richard Culley with robbery, use of a firearm in the commission of a felony, conspiracy to commit robbery and possession of a firearm by a convicted violent felon. Arrest warrants charge Tammy Culley with robbery, use of a firearm in the commission of a felony and conspiracy to commit the felony.

Investigators believed the Culleys were in Staunton or Augusta County. The Staunton Police Department located the suspects’ vehicle in the parking lot of the Stonewall Jackson Hotel in the city. Strasburg officers worked with the Shenandoah County Emergency Communications Center and the Staunton Police Department to arrange for the apprehension of the suspects. Staunton officers arrested the couple without incident at the hotel at approximately 1:30 p.m. Wednesday.

The suspects appear to have a mutual friend with the alleged victims but otherwise, do not know the victims. The unincorporated community of Nathalie lies roughly 190 miles south of Strasburg in Halifax County.
