Ralph Sampson replaced by son as grand marshal

STRASBURG – Former NBA player Ralph Sampson will no longer be the Grand Marshal of the 36th annual Strasburg Chamber of Commerce Mayfest Parade on March 19 due to “urgent business in Dallas,” according to a press release from Mayor Rich Orndorff Jr.

The release states that Sampson will be replaced by his son, Robert Sampson, who has played professional basketball in Montenegro and China.

Although the Chamber of Commerce officials are disappointed that Ralph Sampson will not be able to attend the festival, the release states they are happy Robert Sampson will participate.

The release states that Robert Sampson played basketball at East Carolina University, where he won the CIT Championship and was named to the Conference USA’s all-academic team twice.

The release states that he then transferred to Georgia Tech, where as a senior he averaged 21 minutes per game and was the A.C.C.’s 14th-leading rebounder. During his time at Georgia Tech, Sampson also “made A.C.C. top dunks of the week and featured on ESPN top 10 plays.”
