Sheriff Millholland sponsors fundraiser

Frederick County Sheriff Lenny Millholland is once again sponsoring a community appreciation baseball game to help fundraise for two local organizations.

For 16 years, Millholland has sponsored a night at the Winchester Royals baseball game at Bridgeforth Field in Jim Barnett Park. This year’s game is at 7 p.m. July 3.

Those with a ticket for this year’s game will watch the Royals play the Front Royal Cardinals. Proceeds from those purchasing tickets, the day’s gate sales, will be split between the Frederick County Sheriff’s Office Youth Camp and the William and Henry Evans Home for Children.

“It’s a fun time. I would like to have that place filled,” Millholland said Wednesday.

The youth camp is a week-long event for children to be kids – learning archery, fishing, playing games and working on a community project, he said.

The Evans Home provides a loving, nurturing home for an abused, homeless or otherwise needy child, Millholland said.

Reese Burdette, 11, who in November underwent a kidney transplant, will throw out the first pitch. She had been severely burned in a fire at her grandparents’ home. Medications given to her at that time damaged her organs, including her kidney, resulting in a need for the transplant.

With her will be Alyssa Hussey, the organ donor who saved Reese’s life, he said.

Millholland said Liz Ruffner will be on hand to sing the National Anthem, as well as Patsy Cline songs.

Miniature baseball bats will be given to the first 75 kids under the age of 12.

Some free tickets are also available at the Frederick County Sheriff’s Office, Anna Quinn Jewelry LLC, Anthony’s Pizza locations, Winchester Harley Davidson, Jim Stutzman Chevrolet-Cadillac, The Evans Home for Children, Royal Crown Cola, Russell Roofing, Piccadilly Printing Company, Les Veach State Farm Insurance and CD’s Coffee.
