Eligibility requirements for free or reduced-price meals

Parents with eligible students will again be applying for free or reduced-price meals. The following is from a news release from Shenandoah County Public Schools:

Household size and income will be used to determine eligibility for free or reduced-price meal benefits. Children from households whose income is at or below the Federal Income Eligibility Guidelines may be eligible for either free or reduced-price meals. Children who are members of households who receive Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program benefits or who receive Temporary Assistance for Needy Families may be automatically eligible for free meals. Children who are homeless, migrant or runaway may also be automatically eligible for free meals. Foster children, who are the legal responsibility of a welfare agency or court, are automatically eligible for free meals. Children who are members of a household participating in WIC may be eligible for free or reduced-price meals based on the household’s income.

  • For a household size of one, the maximum household income for free meals is $15,782. The maximum household income for reduced-price meals is $15,782.01 to $22,459.
  • For a household size of two, the maximum household income for free meals is $21,398. The maximum household income for reduced-price meals is $21,398.01 to $30,451.
  • For a household size of three, the maximum household income for free meals is $27,014. The maximum household income for reduced-price meals is $27,014.01 to $38,443.
  • For a household size of four, the maximum household income for free meals is $32,630. The maximum household income for reduced-price meals is $32,630.01 to $46,435.
  • For a household size of five, the maximum household income for free meals is $38,246. The maximum household income for reduced-price meals is $38,246.01 to $54,427.
  • For a household size of six, the maximum household income for free meals is $43,862. The maximum household income for reduced-price meals is $43,862.01 to $62,419.
  • For a household size of seven, the maximum household income for free meals is $49,478. The maximum household income for reduced-price meals is $49,478.01 to $70,411.
  • For a household size of eight, the maximum household income for free meals is $55,094. The maximum household income for reduced-price meals is $55,094.01 to $78,403.

For each additional family member, add $5,616 for maximum income for free meals and $7,992 for household income for reduced-price meals.
