Former Front Royal Little League treasurer charged with embezzlement
Front Royal Little League’s former treasurer was arrested and charged with embezzlement Friday for allegedly withdrawing money from the league’s coffers for personal use.
Robert Binnix, 43, of the 2000 block of Fairground Road, was charged on one felony count of embezzlement.
A Front Royal police news release states that he was released from custody Friday and is due in Warren County General District Court at 10 a.m. Aug. 21.
The release states that the Front Royal Little League board of directors filed a complaint with the department in February regarding discrepancies in the organization’s bookkeeping.
The release states that an ensuing investigation found that Binnix withdrew money from the league’s account for personal use without receiving permission from the board of directors.
Detective David Fogle said over the phone he could not reveal how much money was withdrawn but that the embezzlement transpired from April 2016 to March 2017. He added that Binnix served as treasurer for about three years.
Fogle said the “biggest point” he wants to make is that any illicit activities involving the league’s finances have stopped.
He said that there was a complete overhaul of the league’s board of directors in September 2017, when nine new members were elected to all of its seats.
Fogle said the previous board did not keep good records, was not managed well and there were no checks and balances.
“The current board, though, has a good grasp on everything and a good handle on everything and they have all the checks and balances in places,” he said.
Whether Binnix is the lone former board member complicit in embezzlement, Fogle said “at this point in time, he is the only one that I have charged.”
“I cannot tell you there won’t be anything additional coming because this is an ongoing investigation,” he said.
Board president Roger Smelser said over the phone that he has no comment. All other board members who were contacted also refused to co0mment.
Missy Henry, the board’s treasurer, said because Binnix’s arrest just occurred “we just cannot comment until we have all our facts.” She added that the board is scheduled to hold a meeting Saturday morning and it “will go from there.”
