Shenandoah County administrators hire finance director

A former employee is coming back to work for Shenandoah County.

Angela Schellhammer has been hired as the county’s new director of finance. She replaces Harrison Nicholson who left the position after about a year and three months to move back to Texas.

She officially takes over the role Sept. 4, at a starting salary of $84,914. Nicholson’s ending salary was $78,561

Shenandoah County administrator Mary Price said the increase is a result of Schellhammer having more experience in local government accounting than Nicholson.

Schellhammer said she has about 20 years in local government accounting. She has worked for Winchester and in accounting and payroll for the Frederick County Public Schools.

Schellhammer worked for Shenandoah County as an accounting manager from 2016 to 2017. She left to work as an accountant in a local office of the Federal Emergency Management Agency for a year and a half before returning to Shenandoah County.

“I always had my eye on this position,” Schellhammer said, adding she was excited when she realized the job was  open again.

“It’s the next step in my career. It is a leadership role,” Schellhammer said.

“Having worked in Shenandoah County, I know it’s a great team.”

She already knows the accounting systems and procedures.

“I can come right in and I don’t have hurdles to overcome,” Schellhammer said.

Price said it reflects well on the county when a former employee wants to return to work for the county.

“It was great when she said she wanted to be a part of a great team. It’s not just the administration, it’s the employees and co-workers,” Price said.

Schellhammer, as director, will oversee the county’s finance department, budget development and management, accounts payable, payroll and benefits processing, debt management, risk management, financial accounting and reporting as well as coordinating the yearly independent audit.

She was raised in Winchester and attended Shenandoah University where she graduated with honors with a bachelor’s degree in business administration.
