Low water bridge reopens after flooding

The Morgan Ford Bridge reopened late Friday afternoon after a three-day closure that was the result of complications from recent rain events.

Sandy Myers, Virginia Department of Transportation communications manager, said over the phone at 2 p.m. Friday that the bridge would reopen at about 3 p.m.

She said that the recent rain left the bridge flooded Tuesday through Wednesday night. After the water receded, she said crews had to remove debris such as branches.

While the bridge itself suffered no damage, Myers said that crews had to repair asphalt damages on the road approaching the bridge.

Myers said this was the third flooding at the lower bridge since it opened in January.  She noted that VDOT never said the bridge would not flood and had it not been for the replacement, it would have been closed much longer.
