Strasburg Fire Department to hold open house
The Strasburg Fire Department will hold an open house between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. Saturday at its fire station at 163 E. King St.
Milton Painter, the department’s interim president, said the event would feature an obstacle course for children who attend.
The children, he said, will wear replica fire gear the department has purchased.
“They’ll put that stuff on, including an air pack, they’ll climb over a couple of things and in the end, they’ll squirt some water out of a fire hose at a little simulated house that we have to simulate putting a fire out,” Painter said.
The “house,” Painter said, consists of sheets of plywood with painted flames that flap down when the water hits them.
“I think kids will think that’s a neat thing,” he said.
In addition to having the obstacle course, Painter said that the department is encouraging people to take a look at the department’s equipment and ask department members questions.
“We’re always looking for people that are interested in joining either from the operational side or the administrative side,” Painter said. “We could always use some good help. This is just a chance for people to come in and see their Fire Department.”
Every year, some fire departments hold open houses in October, around the anniversary of the Great Chicago Fire of 1871.
