Lawsuits filed against business, former manager
NEW MARKET — Two women formerly employed by the Shenvalee Golf Resort have filed civil lawsuits against the business and an ex-boss, stating that he repeatedly committed sexual battery against them from December 2006 to February 2008 and that the resort failed to act on it.

New guide targets Civil War history
A new guide released by the Shenandoah Valley Battlefields Foundation this week aims to teach visitors about the region's Civil War history and to lead them to various sites in the area. The free, 48-page, full-color booklet for the Shenandoah Valley Battlefields National Historic District is available at visitor centers and Civil War sites throughout the region, at the state's 11 welcome centers and at other sites throughout Virginia. It can also be downloaded from the "Visit the Valley" section of the national historic district's Web site at www.ShenandoahAtWar.org.

Residents warned against lottery scam
WOODSTOCK — The Shenandoah County Sheriff's Office is warning residents not to be taken in by a phony lottery scam. "We've received three reports here at the Sheriff's Office today," Sheriff Timothy C. Carter said Tuesday. "That indicates to me that there are probably several others out there that have been mailed to ZIP codes in our area."

WINCHESTER — Shenandoah University recently awarded its first scholarship through the William G. McGowan Charitable Fund's Scholars Program. Jane Derrick, a full-time weekend and evening business student at the university's Northern Virginia Campus in Leesburg, received the $18,000 scholarship, according to a press release.

Group plans relief for cyclone victims
MILLWOOD — A humanitarian aid group based in Clarke County may send workers and supplies to help victims of Cyclone Nargis, which struck Myanmar earlier this month. Project HOPE is doing contingency planning for possible deployment to provide humanitarian assistance-disaster relief support to the country, also known as Burma, according to an organization press release.

Boy charged with stealing DVD player
STRASBURG — A 17-year-old Strasburg boy has been charged with grand larceny for allegedly stealing a DVD player from his father. The boy stole the player from his father's storage shed in the 100 block of Fort Bowman Road on March 25, Shenandoah County Sheriff's Capt. Tom Hodges said.

Front Royal picks development chief
FRONT ROYAL — The town has tapped a Shenandoah County planner to become its new director of planning and zoning for community development. Andrew J. Conlon Jr. has been hired to succeed Nimet R. Soliman, who retired from the post, effective May 1. Conlon has over 20 years of experience in the field, including working in Culpeper, Leesburg, Loudoun County, and more recently, Woodstock, Timberville and Toms Brook, according to a town press release.

Sheriff looking into lifted power tools
MT. JACKSON — The Shenandoah County Sheriff's Office is investigating the theft of more than $1,000 worth of tools from a home under construction on Crooked Run Road. A blue and yellow Dewalt miter saw and a Bosch air compressor were stolen between May 7 and Friday, Capt. Tom Hodges said.
