Volunteer farm in need of donations
WOODSTOCK — A lack of donations is threatening to shorten the Volunteer Farm's harvest this year, according to a Monday news release. "We are getting a lot of publicity but few contributions," said Bob Blair, chairman and CEO of the World Foundation for Children, which operates the farm. "This is the most serious situation we have faced in our five years of existence, but the slump in the economy and high prices are crippling us."

House fire victim in critical condition
STRASBURG — The 21-year-old man hospitalized with burns on more than 90 percent of his body following a fire Saturday remains in critical condition at the burn center at Washington Hospital Center, a spokeswoman said Wednesday afternoon. Alberto Rivera-Villalba, of 5198 John Marshall Highway, was severely burned during the fire early Saturday evening. The cause of the blaze remains under investigation.

Man accused of rape to face jury
WOODSTOCK — One of two men accused of raping a fellow resident at a special needs home in New Market will have an Aug. 20 jury trial, according to online Shenandoah County Circuit Court records. Thomas Neil Elliot III, 37, faces a charge of rape, along with Zachary Joseph Acome, 23, after an incident said to have taken place late at night Feb. 27 at Shenandoah Valley Village. The facility is at 9137 N. Congress St.

Train strikes car; charges pending
STRASBURG — Charges are pending against a woman whose car was struck by a train Tuesday night as she crossed the tracks on Va. 637 just off of Va. 55, according to state police. Arlene Schultz, 48, of Toms Brook, was taken to Shenandoah Memorial Hospital for what appeared to be minor injuries, Trooper C.S. Cline said. Her 14-year-old son was in the car, but not injured, he said.

STRASBURG — The Town Council vote on Tuesday to appropriate the money for Strasburg's nearly $8.2 million fiscal 2009 budget was not inappropriate, officials said Wednesday. After the council adopted the spending plan, Councilman Donald Le Vine moved that the panel appropriate the funds for the budget. Councilman Carl Rinker said he didn't think the group could vote on the appropriation because it was "not in the advertised sequence of the meeting."

Three-vehicle crash causes I-81 backup
MT. JACKSON — A 16-year-old Harrisonburg boy was charged with reckless driving following a three-car crash on Interstate 81 Wednesday afternoon. The teen was entering the interstate at southbound mile marker 269 around 1:15 p.m. when he failed to yield his 2007 Dodge Nitro, state Trooper M.C. Munsey said. The car hit a school bus, which was in transit to Kentucky after having recently been sold to a bus company, and caused the bus to then hit a tractor-trailer, the trooper said. A passenger who was sleeping in the truck at the time of the crash was transported to Shenandoah Memorial Hospital with minor injuries.

WOODSTOCK — An Edinburg man was charged with possession with intent to distribute a schedule I drug after a brief pursuit Monday afternoon, the Shenandoah County Sheriff's Office said. Scott Proctor said an off-duty deputy "observed a drug buy taking place" in the Wal-Mart parking lot Monday afternoon, and "for lack of a better word, he kind of interrupted the thing."

Volunteer Farm gets $2,000 grant
WOODSTOCK — The Volunteer Farm has received a $2,000 grant from the Bama Works Fund of the Charlottesville Area Community Foundation, according to a press release. The money comes at an ideal time because donations to the farm are declining, said Bob Blair, chairman and CEO of the World Foundation for Children, which operates the farm. The number of people seeking food assistance has jumped 25 to 30 percent in the last six months, he said in the release.

Rape charge OK'd against second man
WOODSTOCK — A charge that a New Market man raped a fellow resident at a special needs home has been certified to a Shenandoah County Circuit Court grand jury. Quicksburg man arrested in Mich.
Unless he can come up with a $500,000 bond, a Quicksburg man won't be getting out of a Michigan county jail, at least until his sex case goes to court. Steven Daniel Smoot, 28, with a last known address of 2391 Pinewoods Road, was arrested June 3 and charged with third-degree criminal sexual conduct, Grand Traverse County Sheriff Scott Fewins said Tuesday.

Child hospitalized after pool incident
STRASBURG — A 6-year-old girl was taken to Winchester Medical Center on Monday afternoon when she started feeling ill about 40 minutes after being pulled out of the Strasburg pool. Todd Stapleton, of 12339 Old Valley Pike, Edinburg, was charged with assault and battery on a family member, robbery, unauthorized use of a motor vehicle and property destruction, Shenandoah County Sheriff's Maj. Scott Proctor said.

EDINBURG — Tools, car parts and knives were reported stolen from Mike's Garage, 1997 Belgravia Road, last week. The business was broken into sometime between May 31 and June 2, Shenandoah County Sheriff's Maj. Scott Proctor said. The business is still inventorying what was taken, he said.
