NIE - Newspaper in Education
Newspaper in Education has been around for more than 70 years in newspapers across the country. The Daily is excited to provide this wonderful program to the Shenandoah Valley to promote literacy and learning through newspaper.
Using newspapers in the classroom is a proven way to promote reading and to increase reading and writing scores. A 2003 study by the University of Minnesota found that schools that used NIE programs had a 10 percent increase in standardized reading
scores over schools without NIE.
In September 2004, The Daily began running a full-color, full-page feature each week called KidScoop. The page includes fun activities and a place for local children to have their writing published. The Daily runs special sections, serial stories, special projects and curriculum for teachers' use throughout the year.
Teachers in each school district are participating, and they receive papers each week in their classrooms to use.
Sponsors for these newspapers help make this program possible for as many teachers as want newspapers. Your business could be a part of this win-win program. Platinum sponsors have their logo on the kid's page each week, along with benefiting from thank-you ads and promotional pieces throughout the year. Having your logo associated with NIE says to your community that you care about children and education.
