Mary McComas, of Warren County, has retired after 40 years as a volunteer with the Warren County Farm Bureau Board.
She served as secretary/treasurer with the operation, which began in the home of the first secretary/treasurer, Frances Jett, of Ninevah. Jett held office for 28 years before stepping down.
McComas, who had been a board member and local legislative chairman, was voted into her most recent position.
The operation moved into its first official office space and began adding more member benefits, in addition to its insurance program.
McComas has attended all but three of the state conventions during her tenure and served on several committees while working on projects to benefit farming in Warren County and throughout Virginia.
Lorraine Smelser, of Bentonville, will take over the secretary/ treasurer duties for 2013.
McComas will remain a member of the county board representing farmers in her district.
At a recent board meeting members presented her with a gift certificate in appreciation for her services.
McComas and her husband Mack operate a local Angus cow and calf operation.
