Lord Fairfax Community College students achieved significant merits at the year-end Collegiate Forensic Association tournament held March 1 and 2 in Ocean City, Md. Over 200 competitors from many four-year institutions spanning the east coast from Brooklyn College to Florida College were in attendance. LFCC was the only community college finding itself in the finals repetitively.
For the 2013-13 CFA Season Awards overall awards, Derek Thomas won first place for After Dinner Speaking. David Jezierski and Ron Anderson placed first for Dramatic Duo Interpretation. David Jezierski came in first for Informative Speaking, and the runner up was Ron Anderson.
At the Forensics Tournament Awards Individual awards in Ocean City, Md., Derek Thomas won first place for After Dinner Speaking. Kelsey Owens placed first for Informative Speaking, and the second place winner was John Riggs. Shannon Moeck came in fifth for Persuasive Speaking. Derek Thomas and Debbie Baldwin came in sixth for Dramatic Duo Interpretation.
Members of the team were Derek Thomas of Bluemont, David Jezierski of Berryville, Ron Anderson of Strasburg, Kelsey Owens of Clearbrook, John Riggs of Luray, Shannon Moeck of Stephens City and Debbie Baldwin and Winchester.
The Forensics Team is sponsored by the Speech and Drama Department for students who want to excel in speaking and performing arts. In its 18 year history, the team has earned numerous trophies and awards.
