The selection of princesses to serve in the Court of Queen Shenandoah LXXXVI for the 2013 Shenandoah Apple Blossom Festival has been announced by festival officials. The princesses include Lucy Ann Foeckler, Colleen Morgan Koppenhaver, Carlyse Deborah Phillips, Samantha Nicole Ravn and Rachel Moore Russell.
Lucy Foeckler will represent Lord Fairfax Community College in Winchester where she is a freshman majoring in liberal arts. She is the daughter of Kathy and Mike Foeckler of Front Royal. She is the granddaughter of Theresa and Kevin Harrigan of Manassas and Lucy and Eugene Foeckler of Silver Spring, Md. She is on the LFCC soccer team and is a Big Brother Big Sister volunteer. She also volunteers at her parish church soup kitchen and the Front Royal Pregnancy Center.
Colleen Koppenhaver attends the University of Virginia in Charlottesville, where she is a second year student majoring in nursing. She is the daughter of Allison and Tim Koppenhaver of Winchester. She is the granddaughter of Shirley and Ralph Mitchell and Joan and Andy Koppenhaver, all of Winchester. She graduated from John Handley High School where she was co-editor of the Handlian Yearbook, played soccer and volleyball, and was awarded The Winnie Legge Award for Best All-around Athlete. At UVA she is a member of Sigma Kappa Sorority. Koppenhaver is on the Awake 'Til Dawn executive board, an organization that raises money for St. Jude Children's Research Hospital and she is a member of the National Students Nurses Association.
Carlyse Phillips will represent Potomac State College of WVU in Keyser, W.Va., where she is a sophomore majoring in business technology. She is the daughter of Deborah Phillips and Carlos Phillips both of Cincinnati, Ohio. She is the granddaughter of the late Deborah Robertson-Sweet, James Taylor, Esther Phillips and Carlos Dubose-Phillips. Phillips graduated from Withrow High School in Cincinnati, Ohio, where she was on the student council and was head of the senior yearbook. She took four years of athletic training, softball, volleyball and cheerleading.
Samantha Ravn attends Virginia Tech in Blackburg where she is a sophomore majoring in housing. She is the daughter of Deborah and Henrik Ravn of Winchester. She is the granddaughter of Mrs. and Mr. Peter Ravn of Roskilde, Denmark, and the late Mrs. and Mr. Robert Sondrol. Ravn graduated from John Handley High School in 2011 where she was a National Honor Society officer and was active in band for four years. She attends First Presbyterian Church.
Rachel Russell will represent The Virginia Horticultural Society and is a senior at James Wood High School in Winchester. She is the daughter of Kirk Russell of Clearbrook and Sherry Russell and Bryan Bennett of Gore. She is the granddaughter of Joan and John Jackson of Winchester and Gwen and Henry Russell of Clearbrook and Beverly Bennett and the late Raymond Bennett. She is a member of the National Honor Society, Key Club, Future Farmers of America and Valley Health Juniors Volunteers.
The princesses will accompany Queen Shenandoah LXXXVI and her Court to all festival functions throughout the 86th festival scheduled for April 26 through May 5. They will participate in the Coronation Ceremony to be held at 1:30 p.m. on May 3 at John Handley High School. They will ride the Royal Float in the Grand Feature Parade scheduled to begin at 1:30 p.m. on May 4.
