Skydiving safety draws interest

Blue Ridge Skydiving Adventures hosted its first Safety Day at the New Market Airport Saturday.

The purpose of the event was to kick off the 2013 skydiving season with a safety review covering all aspects of the sport of skydiving.

More than 25 skydivers, including members of the staff and local fun-jumpers, attended the event and discussed subjects such as safe canopy piloting, the importance of skydiving equipment checks prior to each jump, review of trends in the sport, aircraft procedures, refresher training in response to unusual situations, and local rules and regulations.

In addition, participants made over 40 parachute jumps and were treated to a buffet lunch from the New Market Subway.

Blue Ridge Skydiving Adventures opened in March 2012 and has started its second season with two aircraft, a Cessna 182 and a Cessna 206.

Last year, more than a half million people took the leap for the first time at more than 200 USPA-affiliated skydiving schools and centers across the country.

First-timers and licensed skydivers together made more than 3.1 million jumps in 2012.
Blue Ridge Skydiving Adventures operates Thursday through Monday from March 30 to Sept. 30 and weekends until closure in December.
