Varsity swimmers at Wakefield Country Day School did well in their closing meets of the season. In the Delany Athletic Conference Championships, both the boys team and the girls team -- despite having only five and two swimmers respectively -- finished seventh in the team standings. Also, the girls finished seventh as a team at the state meet among smaller schools.

The DAC meet was held on Feb. 9 in Fredericksburg. Once again, senior Rachel DuMez led the way for the Owls. For the third straight year, she won two events and was named to the All-Conference Team. DuMez, of Front Royal, captured the 100-yard freestyle (56.49) and the 100-yard backstroke (1:00.10). Her teammate Anne Katherine Burns also earned points in two events. The sophomore, also of Front Royal, placed fourth in the 100-yard butterfly (1:12.96) and sixth in the 50-yard freestyle (28.64).

On the boys side, senior Conor O'Heir, of Huntly, topped the squad with a third place finish in the 100-yard freestyle (56.58) and a 4th in the 100-yard backstroke (1:04.50). He also was named to the All-Conference Team. Eighth grader Lucas Dumez chipped in points with a fifth place finish in the 100-yard backstroke (1:06.46).

O'Heir and DuMez were joined by senior Will Scaring of Warrenton and freshman Shane O'Heir to take fifth place in the 400-yard freestyle relay and seventh place in the 200-yard medley relay. Junior Michael Chen competed too.

At the state meet on February 15 and 16 at the Collegiate School Aquatic Center in Richmond, O'Heir and Burns swam one event each, but failed to make the finals.
DuMez had dramatic drops in her times of almost two seconds in both of her events to finish 5th in the 100-yard backstroke (58.15) and 7th in the 100-yard butterfly (58.48).
