Community reading project chooses Cather's 'O Pioneers!'

The One Book One Community committee announced Wednesday at Handley Regional Library in Winchester that this year's chosen book is Willa Cather's "O Pioneers!"

Originally published in June 1913, the book is what Cather credits for helping her stop writing like other authors and find her own voice, according to a press release from the library.

Cather was born Dec. 7, 1873 near Gore. She moved to Red Cloud, Neb., with her family in 1883 at the age of 9 and died April 24, 1947.

The release said the library and Cather's book each will celebrate its 100th anniversary this year.

One Book One Community events will take place throughout the year, beginning June 7 at the Museum of the Shenandoah Valley with a lecture, gallery admission, tours of the American Impressionism exhibit and cake, all for $5 for museum members and Magic Lantern members, or $10 for the general public. A showing of "O Pioneers!" will be free at 7 p.m. on Sept. 18 at the Handley Library Auditorium. Events will continue through October.

"O Pioneers!" is available in print edition or as a downloadable ebook at www.handleyregional.org. The Gutenberg Project, at www.gutenberg.org/ebooks/24, is another source for a free ebook.
