In keeping with the "Wellness Initiative" at Shenandoah Valley Westminster Canterbury,
the retirement community partnered with Shenandoah University's Division of Physical Therapy to conduct functional fitness testing for residents on April 20. Dr. Thomas Turner from S.U.P.T. led the effort.
Turner is a 1997 graduate of the Medical College of Virginia, Department of Physical
Therapy. He also earned a bachelor's of science in biology from Old Dominion University and a PhD in anatomy and neurobiology from Virginia Commonwealth University. Turner has
been a faculty member at Shenandoah University since 2006.
According to senior fitness instructors, delaying frailty and improving mobility are their
two primary objectives. The functional fitness testing assessed physical parameters/functions and help to establish future activity goals; providing data to wellness and vitality manager Kathy Headley and fitness specialist Elaine Stonesifer. Testing time slots filled up immediately following the announcement. Over 60 SVWC residents took advantage of this unique opportunity, and will be re-tested in six months to see how much progress they have made.
