Lower School students at Wakefield Country Day School were notified this week about awards that they earned in the 2013 Exploratory Latin Exam. In grade four, Peter McMahon earned a Summa Cum Laude Certificate.
In grade five, Casey Poe got a Cum Laude Certificate; and in grade six, Eva Parios earned a Summa Cum Laude Certificate, Brooke Miller got a Magna Cum Laude Certificate, and Rachel Cieplak, Anna Schuster and Lily Shahida each earned a Cum Laude Certificate.
The Exploratory Latin Exam is a nationwide standardized test sponsored by The American Classical League. Awards are given according to the following grading criteria: Summa Cum Laude Certificate: 92 to 100 percent; Magna Cum Laude Certificate: 83 to 91 percent; and Cum Laude Certificate: 76 to 82 percent.
Designed for students in grades three to six, the exam aims are to promote knowledge of basic Latin vocabulary and grammar, as well as a general awareness of classical civilization. Students in grades five and six must answer additional questions on a special theme; this year's theme was "Geography of the Ancient World."
