Despite blood collection challenges during the summer, Front Royal Federal Credit Union's fifth anniversary blood drive set a production record with 26 donations.
On June 19, the organization joined with the American Red Cross to host a blood drive to make sure others have the chance to create summer memories -- watching fireworks, having picnics, going for a swim or enjoying barbecues.
Volunteers and staff celebrated not only the fifth anniversary of the 56-day blood drive, but what was also expected to be the blood drive when the credit union's 500th donor would be welcomed.
The Front Royal Federal Credit Union's 500th donor, James C. Farrar, arrived early afternoon. To commemorate this sponsorship milestone, all those who came to donate received a free t-shirt while supplies lasted and enjoyed anniversary cake. The 500th donor mark was also celebrated with the carillon bells of Calvary Episcopal Church.
Many unable to donate blood supported Red Cross disaster relief activities in northern Virginia by donating funds to the organization's Top of the Virginia Chapter during the past month.
At the end of the day, the event helped to bring in $611.63; local resident Dan McCarty put the fundraising effort over its $500 goal, one for each blood donation given at Front Royal Federal Credit Union blood drives.
Blood donations often decline during the summer, when schools are out and vacations are in. The Red Cross encourages donors to make an appointment to give now to help ensure a stable supply in the weeks and months ahead, giving patients a chance to create a summer of stories.
