Linden Rotary Club receives grant for school playground
The Rotary Club of Linden has received a $3,000 Community Project Grant from Rotary International District 7570 to help fund a project to improve the playground at E. Wilson Morrison Elementary School in downtown Front Royal. The project will include updating playground equipment for grades 3-5.
The Linden club has made a two-year fundraising commitment to support this service project. Proceeds from the club's recent 2013 Anniversary Gala will be designated for the playground improvement, and the project will also be a beneficiary of the 2014 Anniversary Gala.
The Linden club is partnering with Warren County Public Schools and E. Wilson Morrison Elementary School on the project. The school, with the involvement of its parent-teacher organization, is helping to provide funding for the project by leading its own fund development efforts as well as supporting the Gala events.
The multi-year, multi-phase playground project is estimated to cost between $33,000 and $50,000, including in-kind donations and Rotarian work. The first phase includes refurbishing the existing playground area, painting a United States map on a section of asphalt, installing a new volleyball area and preparing the site for a new play area. Linden Rotarians have volunteered to help paint the US map. Later phases of the project will include the selection, purchase and installation of new playground equipment. The District 7570 Community Project Grant funds are provided as a 50-50 match with club funding and will be used for excavation, site preparation and installation of the volleyball court.
Rotary International District 7570 covers Western Virginia and Northeastern Tennessee with more than 3,500 members and 84 clubs.
In addition to the Rotary District 7570 grant, the project has received a $500 LEARN (Literacy, Education, and Rural Networking) Education Grant from the Rappahannock Electric Cooperative.
The Rotary Club of Linden, originally sponsored by the Rotary Club of Front Royal, was chartered in April 2005 and has 36 members. The club meets each Wednesday at 7 a.m. at The Apple House in Linden.
