The Wakefield Country Day School Middle School History Bowl Team competed in the Middle School History Bowl National Championships in Washington, D.C., May 18-19. With wins on both days, the team earned a fifth place finish.

The finals were held May 19 on the grounds of Mt. Vernon. In the three morning rounds, Wakefield went 1-2 in its bracket, defeating a team from Florida. The team finished as National Quarterfinalists, placing fifth overall. Wakefield's MVP's were Douglas Griffin and Owen Youngquist. The event was won by team from Oregon.

The Wakefield team roster included Bernie Cieplak, Tony Elar, Grayson Galeone, Andrew Kwolek, Harmony Lindstrom, Chris O'Heir, Zoe Porterfield and Alex Smith, as well as Griffin and Youngquist.

Twenty-six qualifying teams competed in the National Championships. These teams came from many states and also from Japan and Guam. Matches on May 18 were held at various sites around the Washington metropolitan area. On that day, Wakefield played eight rounds against schools from Pennsylvania, Maryland, Virginia, Delaware, New Jersey, Iowa and Kansas. The team went 6-2, finishing in the top eight and thus qualifying for Sunday's Finals.

To compete in the National Championships, the school team had to be a top finisher at a regional meet. The Wakefield team did this by finishing first among middle school teams at the Eastern Virginia Regional Meet in February.

History Bowl, which is a variation on regular quiz bowl, focuses entirely on world history and culture and spans all of human history.
