Randolph-Macon Academy announces award winners

Randolph-Macon Academy has congratulated several world language students who attained national recognition for excellent performance on the 2013 National Spanish and National German Examinations.

In Spanish, students from R-MA earned a silver medal and a bronze medal, along with eleven honorable mentions. The National Spanish Examinations are sponsored by the American Association of Teachers of Spanish and Portuguese.

In German, Randolph-Macon students earned seven gold medals, three silver medals, six bronze medals and two honorable mentions. According to the American Association of Teachers of German, nearly 22,000 students participated in the German National Exams this year.

In Spanish, the following students earned awards:

Silver: freshman Ethiene Mbakassy.
Bronze: sophomore Ming Yi Chu.
Honorable mention: freshmen Taylor Jones, Michael Bond, Gabriel Barnaby, and Robert DeBerry; sophomores Amy Gray, Mazrukh Khan, Jessica Neupane, and Kyle Sim; seniors Herman Mangueira and Samantha Kelley; and eighth grader Katelyn Shea.

In German, the following students earned awards:
Gold: sophomores William Fausnaugh, Paige Hollis, Natalie Pendie, and Shelby Sebring; freshmen Meghan Melberg, Daniel Nascimento; senior Li Deng.

Silver: senior Quang Hien Dang and sophomore Rebel Hafner. (One student name withheld by parent request.)

Bronze: eighth grader Dennis Ponn; sophomore Jacob Dodson; sophomore Jonathan Pederson; junior Savannah Rhodes; and seniors Rabia Otry and Peter Jin.

Honorable mention: eighth grader Jasmine Bowers and junior Siqi Xie.

Students from R-MA have a long history of high achievement on these exams. The Stephanie Portillo and Julianne Cochran are the Spanish teachers, and Steve Latham is the German instructor.
