The Shenandoah Valley Battlefields Foundation has announced that renowned historian and author Dr. Edward L. Ayers, president of the University of Richmond, will be the featured speaker during its 2013 annual meeting at the Frontier Culture Museum in Staunton at 3 p.m. on Sept. 14.
Looking "forward into the past" will be the theme of the meeting, which will include a review of the SVBF's 2013 events and programs, the presentation of the SVBF's 2013 awards -- the Carrington Williams Preservation Award, the Volunteer of the Year, and the Chairman's Award -- and a look at "Campaign 1864-2014," the SVBF's ambitious plans for the coming sesquicentennial year. It will also feature the release of the DVD edition of the SVBF's film, "If This Valley is Lost: Stonewall Jackson's 1862 Valley Campaign." A reception will follow the meeting.
Tickets for the meeting and reception are $20 per person. For an additional $10, attendees can also purchase a personal copy of the Valley Campaign DVD.
Keynote speaker will be Dr. Edward L. Ayers, president and a professor of history at the University of Richmond, a noted historian and the author of 11 books on American history. He is the recipient of numerous honors and awards, including the National Medal for the Humanities, the National Professor of the Year award from the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching, the Bancroft Prize for distinguished writing in American History and the Beveridge Prize for the best book in English on the history of the Americas since 1492 as well being named a finalist for both the National Book Award and the Pulitzer Prize. His digital archive project, "The Valley of the Shadow: Two Communities in the American Civil War," has been used in thousands of classrooms around the world. He also is a co-host of BackStory, a nationally syndicated radio show that ties history to the present day.
