Wakefield Country Day School in Huntly has announced 14 students attended the 60th annual Junior Classical League Convention held at the University of Nevada Las Vegas July 22-27 with 1,300 other Latin students from around the United States.

Wakefield students earned an impressive 108 awards by participating in numerous events including academic tests, graphic arts competitions, individual and team sporting events, dramatic competitions and seminars. The annual Convention gives the WCDS students an opportunity to live out the ideal of mens sana in corpora sano as they strive to achieve excellence in the wide range of endeavors offered.

Competitions began early in the morning and lasted late into the evening testing the stamina and dedication of the students, their teacher Welby Griffin and the two chaperones, Tina Patel and Scott Clough. Highlights included rising ninth grader Lucas DuMez placing second overall for points earned (points are awarded for first to fifth place finishes) in all events; he earned first place overall for achievement in Olympika (sports) events and eighth overall for achievement in graphic arts contests. Rising ninth graders Campbell Baker finished sixth in Olympika and 16th overall. Rising eighth grader Douglas Griffin finished 11th in graphic arts, 22nd in Academics and 20th overall. Rising 10th grader Brier Clough, who finished seventh in graphic arts, also served as the Virginia delegation's second vice president. She led the delegation to a first place finish in the Spirit Contest and earned two awards (second overall design, first creativity) for the t-shirt she designed for the 124 student Virginia delegation to wear.
