Randolph-Macon Academy in Front Royal has announced that family and honored guests from the local community gathered on the morning of Sept. 11 to pay homage to United States heroes like policemen, firemen, first responders and soldiers, who risk their lives every day for the safety of others.

The ceremony included a 21-gun salute and the playing of Taps to honor patriots who have sacrificed their lives for others. R-MA senior Madeline Chafin of North Carolina gave a short speech about heroes, which included a tribute to mothers, fathers, siblings, children and others who lost someone during the terrorist attacks on Sept. 11, 2001 -- "Everyone who lost someone or knew someone in the attack is a hero," she said.

"Heroes are all around us right now. We all have the potential to let our courage and our bravery show. We can all be examples of what others may want to become," the press release quoted her saying.

The flag was placed at half-staff and flown throughout the day in honor of Staff Sergeant Anthony Drake, a 2001 graduate of Randolph-Macon Academy who is currently serving on active duty. The flag will be sent to him later this month.
