Front Royal artist hits home run with ballpark goal

Front Royal artist Kelly Walker has announced the completion of her project "Painted Diamonds -- 30 Parks in 30 Weeks" a week ahead of schedule. As far as she knows, she is the first artist ever to paint 30 professional baseball parks in one baseball season.

Walker started the project in April and painted an average of one ballpark a week, in addition to Bing Crosby Stadium in Front Royal.

Wednesday when the Boston Red Sox and the St. Louis Cardinals go to the World Series, Walker's art exhibit will begin with a reception from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Blue Ridge Arts Council, 305 E Main St., Suite 1, Front Royal.

Walker's project was funded through Kickstarter, a website that assists artists in funding creative projects. Baseball and art fans from 21 states and the United Kingdom helped fund the Painted Diamonds project, and 11 of the 30 paintings in the series have been sold through pledges to the Kickstarter project. Others who pledged to the project will receive posters, prints, postcards or a catalog featuring images from the project.

Each painting is oriented from behind home plate looking out at the skyline of that team's city.

Walker, a daily painter and blogger, started painting full time six years ago and has been painting almost every day since. She often paints series, but Painted Diamonds is the largest undertaking in her career because of the time limitation she placed on the project.
