R-MA cadets attend STEM conference

Randolph-Macon Academy in Front Royal has announced technology and math teacher Dave Gillis and science teacher Tamala Sebring brought four cadets to Virginia Military Institute for the Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics conference on Oct. 8 and 9.

The group heard Dr. William Casebeer from DARPA talk about his research in cognitive science, Dr. Amy Bernard discuss her work in neuroscience and mapping the human brain, and Dr. Daniel Willingham share how humans remember information. The cadets also were entertained by Steve Spangler and his science "magic." According to Sebring, there were five breakout sessions that allowed everyone to choose topics of special interest and to hear and meet teachers, professors, and science experts from all over Virginia and and the country.

Randolph-Macon Academy was founded in 1892, is a college-preparatory, coeducational day and boarding school for students in grades six to 12. Students in grades nine to 12 participate in R-MA's 91st Air Force Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps and have the option to participate in a unique flight program. R-MA is affiliated with the United Methodist Church and is located in Front Royal.
