Sacred Heart Academy in Winchester has announced that at 9:30 a.m. Sept. 27, an honor guard from Randolph-Macon Academy in Front Royal, under the leadership of the academy's commandant, United States Air Force Col. (Ret) Gary Sadler, visited the Catholic school to demonstrate and explain the military customs regarding the Flag of the United States of America.

Surrounded by the students and teachers, Sadler explained the custom of raising and lowering the flag each day at every military installation, as well as at Randolph-Macon Academy. The color guard then demonstrated the proper raising and lowering of the flag in a precise military formation. Sadler explained that everyone should stand and render the proper salute or hand over heart whenever the flag is moving up or down.

The custom for flying the flag at half staff was also explained and demonstrated. As the National Anthem was played, the entire gathering rendered the proper respect with their hand over their heart.

This program was set up by the local chapter of the Air Force Association and Air Force Col. (Ret) Tom Shepherd.
