Bloom announces new, changing events for 2014

The Shenandoah Apple Blossom Festival office has announced that next year's festival, from April 25 to May 4, will include the following new events under the theme "The Land of Pink & Green":

• Apple Blossom's Got Talent -- Following the Grand Feature Parade on May 3, at the Sprint Festival Event Tent, the festival will hold the finals of a season-long talent search along with the usual good-time excitement of a festival party. The festival will present the champion of this talent search with a cash prize of $5,000 plus other gifts and prizes. There will be three to four try-outs, probably once a month in January, February, March and April building up to the finals in May with around 15 finalists. Exact times, dates, locations, rules, entry forms and fees, will be announced in future media releases and at www.thebloom.com. Information: 540-662-3863 or Theresa Gaines at tagaines6@yahoo.com.

• Oldies Rock 'n' Roll Dance -- The popular Sunrise Medical Laboratories Oldies Rock 'n' Roll Dance will be in a new time, on Saturday night of Wine Festival Weekend, from 7 to 11 p.m. April 26. The location will remain the same: the ballroom at the Winchester Moose Lodge on East Cork Street in Old Town. A new band also has been lined up to inaugurate the new proceedings: Rick K. and the Allnighters, which has a national reputation on the oldies circuit. Information: Roger Ernst at RLErnst828@aol.com.

• The 80s Dance Party -- The Jim Stutzman Chevrolet-Cadillac 80s Dance Party, which started this year, earned more than the expected 600-800 attendees, instead selling well over 1,200 tickets. In an effort to keep the ball rolling and to reward the Bloom nation for its support of the event, organizers have hired a new band, Rubix Kube, an 80s tribute band that plays in the New York City area.

• Weekend-in-the-Park -- A "Back to the Future" theme is being considered for the 2014 Anthony's Pizza Weekend-in-the-Park, and plans might also include moving the Arts and Crafts Show back to its old location along the tree-shaded road through the park and expansions of other events to keep them all closer together.
