New Market library celebrates five-year anniversary
The New Market Area Library held various events earlier this month as part of its fifth anniversary celebration.
On Nov. 1, Jane Shumway led a Kids Create Day at the library where children and their parents designed works of art to decorate the library for its fifth anniversary celebration. Other events for children included a Books and Babies session on Nov. 4.
The New Market Area Library held its anniversary kick off celebration on at 4 p.m. on Nov. 3, with a performance by the Shenandoah Valley Academy, led by string instrumental director Kelly Wiederman and choral music director Joshua Goines. Students performed with them in a double string quartet, the Men's Quartet, the choral group and a trio performing Irish music. The jazz group Shenandoah Swing, from the academy also performed Nov. 7 for a coffeehouse reception.
The library ended the anniversary week with an adult program featuring the Technology Zoo from the Shenandoah County Library, with library staff displaying different types of e-readers, tablets and other electronic devices. The 20 participants were encouraged to look, touch and use devices as well as ask questions so they would be more knowledgeable about what to purchase for Christmas or better be able to better use their own devices.
Dallas Moore, technology services coordinator at the Shenandoah County Library, started the program with a brief presentation. Then Moore offered individual help with David Robinson, adult services librarian, and Sandy Whitesides, director of the Shenandoah County Library.
Adult programs have been popular over the past year, and along with celebrating the fifth year in its current location, the library celebrated beginning the second year of adult programing. Beverly Butterfield is volunteer adult services coordinator, and Bonnie Flick is the co-coordinator. The programs presented over the past year have been varied and unique, and attendance has ranged from a dozen to over 50 participants. Many exciting programs are already planned for 2014, and will be announced in December.
