Wakefield Country Day School announces sports results


The athletic department at Wakefield Country Day School in Huntly has announced the following sports news:

The varsity swimming team saw good results in its meet on Dec. 6 against Fredericksburg Academy. Five schools were represented at the meet, and the Wakefield Owls had first place finishes on the boys' side in the 200 meter individual medley, 400 freestyle and 400 meter freestyle relay.

The top 10 results for males were as follows:

Shane O'Heir earned fourth place in the 50 meter freestyle, with a time of 30.78, and Chris O'Heir came in fifth with a time of 31.50.

Shane O'Heir came in fifth in the Male 100 backstroke with a time of 1:26.98.

Lucas DuMez took first place in the 200 meter individual medley, with a time of 2:32.74.

Chris O'Heir took first place in the 400 freestyle swim, with a time of 5:55.13.

The school's male 200 freestyle relay team took fourth place, with Shane O'Heir, Gray Galeone, Lucas DuMez and Chris O'Heir completing the race with a time of 2:15.52.

The male 400 freestyle relay team took first place, with Chris O'Heir, Gray Galeone, Shane O'Heir and Lucas DuMez clocking 5:25.48.

The female swim teams results were as follows:

Dante Parker took 10th place in the 50 meter freestyle with a time of 44:49.

Josephine Burns took seventh in he 100 freestyle race with a time of 1:29.97.

Josephine Burns swam the 200 meter individual medley in 3:40.69 for a fifth place win.

Harmony Lindstrom also participated in the meet.

The varsity boys' basketball team played in the annual Life and Breath Tournament on Dec. 7 at Wakefield School, filling a void left when a team scheduled to play in the tournament backed out in the last weeks before the tournament.

The boys faced Faith Christian School, a big team from Roanoke, and missing two starters because of an injury and an absence, they lost 56-18. Alex Foster led the team with 12 points. Michael Stone and Sean Brown were the only other players to score in the game.

On Dec. 11, the Owls played Tandem Friends School in their first DAC game. The Badgers won 58-26. Foster and Stone each scored eight points. Foster had double figure rebounds with 10 and Stone added seven rebounds. Tim Johns added seven points and four blocked shots. Sean Brown hit a three -point shot off an inbounds play. Foster led the team with four assists and Max Lilburn pulled down a rebound. Coach Dick again got his entire roster in the game. Our record is 2-3 overall and 0-1 in the DAC.

The varsity girls basketball team also played Tandem Friends School on Dec. 11 for a non-conference game. Both teams had cold shooting efforts in the first quarter but the girls managed to hold an eight to four lead at the end of the quarter. In the third quarter, they defensively shut out the Badgers while scoring 13 points and pushed the lead to 29-6. The Owls won 33-12.

Maeve Dale outscored the Badgers with 14 points and completed a double-double with 10 rebounds. She also added four assists. Kim Pankow contributed 11 points, led the team with 5 assists and added six steals. She also blocked a shot. Emily Hennessy chipped in four points to go with five rebounds. Tatumn Vaught and Julia Weir also scored in the game. Every player contributed to the victory. The Lady Owls' record so far this season is 3-0.

The middle school boys' basketball team postponed its Dec. 9 game against Chelsea Academy and Dec. 10 game against Shenandoah Valley Christian Academy because of bad weather. The team's record is 2-0 overall and 1-0 in the Virginia Middle School Conference.
