Apple Blossom Festival maids chosen

The Shenandoah Apple Blossom Festival Office has announced that four young women from the Winchester area have been selected to serve as maids of honor of the Court of Queen Shenandoah LXXXVII during the festival, April 25-May 4. The maids are Madison Emily Lewis, Alexa Nicole Pivarnik, Victoria Katherine Smith and Cassidy Ann Veach.

Madison Lewis is the daughter of Anne and Linden Lewis Jr. of Cross Junction. She is the granddaughter of Beverly and Richard Popp of Yorkville, Ill., Betty Lewis of Winchester, the late Linden Lewis Sr. and the late Kathleen Popp. Madison Lewis attends Radford University as a freshman majoring in Elementary Education, focusing on English and special education. She is a 2013 graduate of John Handley High School where she was a member of the National Honor Society and Anchor Club.

Alexa Pivarnik is the daughter of Sonja and Carleton Rio of Winchester. She is the granddaughter of John Stuart and Lynne and Carmen Rio, all of Winchester. She is a freshman at BYU Idaho majoring in Criminal Psychology. Pivarnik is a graduate of Millbrook High School where she played Varsity Soccer and was in the choir. Her grandfather, Rio, was festival president in 2005 and 2006.

Victoria Smith is the daughter of Debbie Smith and Michael Smith, both of Winchester. She is the granddaughter of Carolyn and Harold Mummert, and Dolores Smith, all of Winchester, and the late Gerald "Jerry" Smith. She is a freshman attending Virginia Tech majoring in interior design. She is a 2013 graduate of Foxcroft School, where she held a senior leadership position. She is an accomplished equestrian, competing in the High Junior Jump Divisions on the a show circuit expanding from Florida to Europe.

Cassidy Veach is the daughter of Sabra and Les Veach of Winchester. She is the granddaughter of Betty Ganoe of Winchester, Thomas Ganoe of Romney, W.Va., Doug and Wanda Veach of Petersburg, W.Va., and the late June Veach. Cassidy Veach is a freshman at Virginia Tech majoring in University Studies. She is a 2013 graduate of John Handley High School, where she played varsity basketball and softball. She was a member of the History Club, French Club, Key Club, National Honor Society and Interact Club, and she received the Handley Pride Award. She is a member of the Opequon Church Youth Group.

The maids will participate in the coronation ceremony of Queen Shenandoah LXXXVII held on May 2 at John Handley High School and ride on the queen's float in the Grand Feature Parade.
