Jack Clark, a junior at Chelsea Academy in Front Royal, won the academy's competition or Poetry Out Loud, a nationwide poetry recitation competition, on Dec. 3. He won with his recitation of "The American Soldier" and "As Kingfishers Catch Fire." In second place, senior Kieran O'Donnell presented "The Donkey" and "America."
Advancing through a preliminary round, six of Chelsea's high school students competed in the school-wide contest. Each student recited two poems and was judged by a panel of four independent judges. Students chose their poems from a poetry anthology provided by the Poetry Out Loud organization, and judging at the school level was based on the same criteria as that of the regional, state and national competitions.
Jack will advance to the regional competition in Arlington on Jan. 31, where he will compete with students from Warren, Prince William, Frederick, Stafford and fourteen other counties in Virginia. The winner of the regional competition will advance to the state contest in Richmond later in the spring.
