Randolph-Macon Academy in Front Royal recently participated in the fourth annual Science, Technology, Engineering and Math Summit at Foxcroft School in Middleburg. The summit was sponsored by K2M Inc., the largest privately held spinal device company in the world focused on the research, development, and commercialization of innovative solutions for the treatment of complex spinal problems.

At the STEM summit, eight qualified girls from R-MA were some of the more than 80 girls in the high school portion of the competition.

R-MA teams were the Knights of Pi, represented by Paige Hollis, Ixel Ochoa, Madeleine Orem and Shelby Sebring, all of the class of 2015; and the Stoichiometry Stars, with Alice Gong, Meghan Melberg and Amy Wang, all in the class of 2016 and Lizzie Ma, the class of 2015.

Participants included 44 teams from 22 public and independent schools in Virginia, Maryland and Washington, D.C. It was a fun and challenging event which highlighted brilliant females, who traditionally are underrepresented in this field.

Represented schools also included Georgetown Visitation in Washington, D.C; Academy of Science in Sterling,, Loudoun Valley High in Purcellville, Madeira School in McLean, Middleburg Academy and Foxcroft School, both in Middleburg.

R-MA's Stoichiometry Stars were awarded the medal for achieving the highest score in "Playing Doctor: Building a Spinal Construct."
