R-MA's Ryan Latham wins school-level geography bee

Randolph-Macon Academy in Front Royal has announced eighth grader Ryan Latham of Amissville won the school level competition of the National Geographic Bee, with Gabe Dubin of Front Royal coming in close second following a series of tie-breakers to determine a winner.

After winning, Ryan took a written test in an attempt to qualify for the state competition. He is awaiting results.

A press release from R-MA cited the National Geographic website, www.nationalgeographic.com/geobee/, saying thousands of U.S. schools participate in the National Geographic Bee every year using materials prepared by the National Geographic Society.

"The contest is designed to encourage teachers to include geography in their classrooms, spark student interest in the subject, and increase public awareness about geography," the press release quoted.

The contest is open to students in grades four through eight.
