The Virginia Department of Historic Resources has announced it recently approved 11 sites for listing in the Virginia Landmarks Register, including Millbank in Frederick County and Lackawanna in Warren County.
Millbank is one of the few antebellum buildings in the area affiliated with the Third Battle of Winchester, Sept. 19-23, 1864, a VDHR press release said. It provided medical care for wounded in the early part of the battle.
The Fort Collier Civil War Center in Winchester owns the abandoned house and according to the release plans to rehabilitate it for other uses.
In Warren County, Lackawanna was built in 1869 on 1.75 acres overlooking the South Fork of the Shenandoah River in Front Royal's Riverton area. Now the Lackawanna Bed and Breakfast, the house was built to have running water and a walk-in closet. A Classical Revival-style front porch was added in 1904 and the home later rehabilitated starting in the late 1990s.
