Area students compete in Envirothon competition

The Lord Fairfax Soil and Water Conservation District has announced five high school teams from four area high schools, plus 24 volunteers -- including industry professionals, area residents and Lord Fairfax Soil and Water Conservation District board members and staff -- met on April 8 at Sherando Park in Stephens City to participate in the 2014 District Envirothon Contest, hosted by the Lord Fairfax Soil and Water Conservation District.

Students from Central High School, Millbrook, Sherando and Strasburg high schools braved the windy day to compete in this year's Envirothon, which is a natural resources competition combining teamwork with "in-field" exercises. Each team worked together to answer written and hands-on questions at five different stations -- aquatics, forestry, soils, wildlife and current environmental issue.

During an oral presentation teams proposed a management solution related to the current environmental issue of sustainable locally grown agriculture. A panel of five judges consisting of industry and natural resource professionals then asked questions of the teams to test their knowledge of the subject.

When all scores were tallied, Strasburg High School walked away with top honors this year, and won five of the six stations. Millbrook High School came in second and Sherando High School was third. The Strasburg High School team is eligible to compete at the Area Envirothon Contest, scheduled for April 24 at McCormick Farm in Raphine.
