Wakefield Country Day School in Huntly has announced eighth grader Douglas Griffin attended the State Geography Bee held at Longwood University in Farmville and made it to the final five of 100 before being eliminated.
The state bee determines which student will represent Virginia at the National Geography Bee sponsored by the National Geographic Society. Only the top 100 of all Virginia school geography bee winners were invited to compete at the state competition after taking a qualifying test.
Douglas is a four-time winner of the school bee at WCDS and attended the state bee for the third time.
Griffin was one of 23 students to earn a perfect score in the eight rounds of preliminaries before advancing to grueling, single-elimination rounds of tie breakers that determined the 10 finalists to compete on stage.
The finals followed a double elimination format, and Griffin made it to the final five before being eliminated. The winner will compete in the National Bee held in Washington D.C. in May.
