Winner of 2011's 'America's Got Talent' to perform in Winchester

Landau Eugene Murphy Jr., 2011 winner of NBC's "America's Got Talent" competition, will attend the Shenandoah Apple Blossom Festival this year, festival President Lou Ann Thompson announced Thursday.

Murphy is expected to guest judge the "Apple Blossom's Got Talent" competition, perform an hour-long concert and ride in the Grand Feature Parade on May 4, a release from the festival office said.

Best described as a classic American jazz singer, Landau of Logan, W.Va., auditioned for NBC's "America's Got Talent" in Nov. 2010 and then climbed his way through the show for a win on Sept. 14, 2011, performing featured numbers like "I've Got You Under My Skin," "I Get a Kick Out of You," "Fly Me to the Moon" and "I've Got the World on a String."

He won the $1 million grand prize and then became a headlining act in Las Vegas later that fall.

He signed with Sony Records and Columbia Records to release his first album, "That's Life," that year on Nov. 21. The album debuted at No. 34 on the Billboard Top 200, a pop chart, but debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard Jazz charts and reached No. 1 in the jazz category on Amazon.com.

Landau has performed at Caesar's Palace, the Apollo Theatre, Madison Square Garden, the Super Bowl and the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade.

He is expected to ride in the Grand Feature Parade in Winchester beginning at 1:30 p.m. May 3. That evening he will be celebrity judge for the Round of 12 at "Apple Blossom's Got Talent" After judges whittle down the 12 contestants to the Round of 6, the public will choose the final winner. Then Landau will perform his Sinatra-styled, Vegas-tinged American jazz.

Festival event tickets are on sale now at the Official Festival Souvenir Store and Ticket Outlet at 302 North Cameron St., Winchester.
