R-MA forensics students place in Metro-Finals Tournament

Randolph-Macon Academy in Front Royal has announced that juniors John Camarella and Jonathan Pederson, senior Micah Peregrino and sophomore Benjamin Schoonover competed in the March 15 annual Metro-Final Tournament at the Washington Arlington Catholic Forensics League.

After four rounds split between Washington and Arlington district competitors, the top three in each district competed in a fifth round for regional winners.

The four events R-MA participated in were Original Oratory, Oral Interpretation, Declamatory Speaking and Impromptu. Pederson and Koyczan qualified for the national tournament in Chicago on May 24.

For Original Oratory, Peregrino and Pederson each wrote, memorized and orated a 10-minute speech. Pederson's speech, on the topic of Glossophobia -- the Fear of Public Speaking -- won him third in districts and sixth in regionals. Peregrino's speech "Man Up" redefined masculinity.

Peregrino earned third in regionals and fourth in districts for Impromptu, which required he choose from three speech topics, then prepare and give a speech within seven minutes.

For Oral Interpretation, Camarella won seventh in districts with his prose rendition of "Jealous Husband Returns in Form of Parrot," by Robert Olen Butler, and poetry rendition "Turn on a Light," by Shane Koyczan.

Schoonover orated the Dartmouth 2011 Commencement Address, originally spoken by Conan O'Brien, for the Declamation event, offered to freshmen and sophomores only and consisting of a speech written by another author, memorized and presented to a judge.
