I-81 north overnight closures announced

The Virginia Department of Transportation reports that parts of northbound Interstate 81 will be closed overnight Sept. 22-27 due to milling and paving work in the southern portion of Shenandoah County. comments

Library celebrates reading program

2014-09-16library1.jpg The New Market Area Library celebrated its summer reading program with 150 children, teens and parents in attendance. Over 100 children and 30 middle and high school students signed up to read over the summer. The celebration included prizes, an ice cream party and petting zoo. Mothers Against Drunk Driving has recognized 22 area law enforcement officers for their efforts in enforcement, education and special training in regard to alcohol and drug impaired driving and the increased drug use problem in the region. comments

R-MA students selected for High Flight program

September is Library Card Sign-Up Month in Shenandoah County, and a card drive is being held for children in kindergarten through sixth grade, according to a news release from Shenandoah County LIbrary Director Robert "Sandy" Whitesides. comments

Scholarship essay contests

Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 2123 is accepting entries for its annual scholarship essay contests. Voice of Democracy is an audio essay competition open to high school students. Patriot's Pen is a written essay contest open to middle school students. Students in public or private schools and home-schooled students may enter at their appropriate grade level. Teachers may use these programs as a class assignment. comments
