On behalf of the Shenandoah Forum, I would like to thank the Shenandoah County Board of Supervisors, members of the Community Planning Project Steering Committee and county staff members for their hard work and continued leadership after more than two years that led to the adoption of the rural areas plan at the Dec. 14 Board of Supervisor's meeting.
This plan is an important step toward achieving the vision of our county's future, a vision that encourages growth in and around our towns while protecting our thriving agricultural lands.
This is clearly something to celebrate as we head into the new year.

District 5 Supervisor Dennis Morris, I am shocked. In your meeting with Sen. Mark Obenshain and Del. Todd Gilbert on Thursday you proposed raising taxes, specifically those pertaining to meals and tobacco.
I do pay the several increased taxes on tobacco, I pay increased premiums on health insurance and life insurance (my insurance will not pay for any assistance in quieting this addiction), but, more to the point, since you choose to segment a population, I point you in the direction of beer and hard liquor. The commonwealth pays great amounts of funds directly associated in services with these products when abused. Mr. Morris, I do find it absolutely appalling that I can buy a six-pack of beer cheaper then I can buy a gallon of milk.

The Congressional Budget Office, the nonpartisan number cruncher, announced that repeal of health-care reform would cost taxpayers in excess of $200 billion.
Republicans in the House, while refusing to give up their own government health care, are attempting to deny health-care coverage for others. All those who are against government health care should be willing to give up their own government health care. This includes members of the House of Representatives, seniors on Medicare and all those receiving VA health-care benefits. It is fundamentally dishonest to benefit from government health care and advocate that it be denied to others.

Wish list for 2011:
• I wish some people, mostly of the female sex, would stop pulling clothes off the hangers in stores, throwing them across the racks or dropping them on the floor to be stepped on.
• I wish the prevalence of curse words one is subjected to in most public places would go into a rapid decline.
• I wish some people would stop calling anyone of opposing political views Nazis and communists in the same breath. Besides being a stupid thing to do, Nazis/fascists hate communists and vice versa, so you can't be both.
• I wish some people would stop making up lies about other people, repeating those lies continuously until other people believe them and get scared out of their wits.
• I wish some people would stop threatening to use the "Second Amendment remedy" on other people who do not think the way they do. I think the people who do that do not wholeheartedly believe in democracy. They certainly don't believe in the First Amendment except when it applies to them.
• Finally, I wish we'd all grow up in this country and stop behaving like a bunch of spoiled brats and school-yard bullies when we don't get our way or what we think we deserve.
Democracy, unlike many other forms of government, requires educated, mature and responsible citizens and leaders in order to work. At this time, under the current climate of rudeness, violence, contempt and self-indulgence, I'm giving democracy in America a 50/50 chance of survival.
