A new chapter begins
By Linda O’Dell Ash – email@example.com
For nearly 80 years, since E.E. Keister consolidated four local papers into one and published it on Sept. 15, 1932, The Northern Virginia Daily has shared your stories, commented on the issues of the day, and given you a voice and a place to express yourself about matters important to you.
The Daily as a business has weathered both lean and prosperous years, through the Great Depression, wars that impacted us locally and technological advances that have reshaped our industry. I imagine that Arthur D. Davidson, the Daily’s first editor, would be astonished at how we now gather and deliver news to you in print, online and via mobile devices.
We’re facing a new chapter in the Daily’s history today. We’re still in the same building at 152 N. Holiday St. in Strasburg, and our phone numbers are all the same. Your paper will be delivered to your home and newspaper racks as usual, but you’ll notice a new name on today’s Editorial page mast – Linda O’Dell Ash. That’s me, and I am honored and excited to be the next editor of the Northern Virginia Daily.
I am not new to the area. I have some deep roots here – some members of the O’Dell side of my family were among early settlers in Shenandoah County. If you don’t recognized the O’Dell name, you may have talked to me at the Daily, or seen my name or photo on the Daily’s website, nvdaily.com, or on facebook.com/nvdaily. I moved here from California more than four years ago to manage the company’s digital products.
I have 35 years invested in the newspaper industry, 16 of which have been managing online content for the Northern Virginia Daily, the Sacramento Bee, the San Antonio Express-News and Naples News. My early years in the business were spent in various roles – reporter, photojournalist, editor and page desiger – in newsrooms in my home state of Ohio, as well as Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Florida, Texas and California.
Moving forward, I will be managing the Daily’s newsroom as well as our website and digital products. The Daily will continue to report on local news of importance to you – in fact, my first mission is to expand coverage of community news and sports in Shenandoah and Warren counties.
I am a part of your community, and I do hope that you will invite me to your meetings and events so that I can assist you in getting your news reported in the Northern Virginia Daily and nvdaily.com.
