Have you noticed more people riding bikes this week? May is national Bike Month and today is National Bike to Work Day.
The benefits of pedal-power are obvious: great exercise, snazzy cycling pants, shirts and helmets with those cool rearview mirrors, and the only fuel you'll burn is your own, thus saving money on gas and maintenance to your vehicle. It's also easy to find a parking place for these green machines, and they don't pollute.
We're not sure how many people in the valley will be biking to work today, but more than 10,000 are expected to take part in the Washington, D.C., area. There will be 58 Bike to Work Day pit stops set up by the Metropolitan Washington Council of Governments in the district, Maryland and Virginia. Free food, refreshments and prizes will be given away.
So if you're out driving today or any day, share the road with those on bikes. They're doing something good for themselves as well as for our community.
