New ID card aids Virginia veterans

Virginia's 823,000 military veterans now have another option for identifying themselves as a former member of the armed services.

On Wednesday, Gov. Bob McDonnell launched a new Virginia Veterans ID Card which veterans can apply for at a state Department of Motor Vehicles office, the DMV 2 Go mobile office or online at www.dmvNOW.com.

The card does not expire and costs $10. Applicants will need an unexpired Virginia driver's license or DMV-issued ID card, and a DD214 DD 256 or WD AGO document.

A press release from the governor's office notes that the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs issues ID cards only to retired veterans and those with a service-connected disability rating. All other veterans not issued a card would have to carry around their DD 214 military discharge document to show that they served in the military.

In addition to convenience, another benefit of the card is that veterans will be able to use it to take advantage of military discounts offered at state parks and stores and restaurants throughout Virginia. Saving money with such discounts will more than pay for the card.
